What To Do if You Notice Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air

When coming in from outside where the wind is icy cold, we expect to walk into a warm, toasty space. But what do you do if you find that your furnace is giving you the cold shoulder by not blowing hot air, or even worse, by blowing cold air?

Trusted HVAC maintenance company Stone Heating and Air, shares what you should do before you call in the pros in this blog post.

Furnace Blowing Cold Air

Check the thermostat fan setting. Your fan setting controls the blower. One of the first things you should do is to check if your thermostat fan setting is set to ON instead of AUTO. If your thermostat fan is set to ON, it means the blower will run 24/7 regardless of whether or not the furnace is heating the air. On the AUTO setting, your fan only runs during a heating cycle and doesn’t push cold air through the vents in between cycles.

Check your furnace filter. Before calling your home heating repair company, check your furnace filter and make sure it’s not too dirty. A clogged filter blocks airflow over the furnace’s heat exchanger, causing it to overheat. When this happens, your furnace can shut off the burners to prevent the heat exchanger from becoming cracked.

Check your pilot light. If your pilot light goes out, this means that there’s no combustion taking place, and therefore no heat. If this happens, turn off the power to the furnace, locate the pilot light assembly and switch it to OFF. Allow about 10 minutes before resetting the switch to PILOT before attempting to relight it. Once the pilot is lit, turn the switch to the ON position and restore power to the furnace.
