5 Things You Can Do to Improve Indoor Air Quality

With people spending more time indoors, it’s more important than ever for homeowners to assess the level of air quality inside their homes. Indoor air pollution not only lowers indoor comfort and overall quality of living, but also increases your risk for developing certain diseases. Fortunately, there are things you can do to improve indoor air quality.

Here’s what Stone Heating and Air, one of your trusted home heating companies, recommends:

 Improve Indoor Air Quality

Change your HVAC filter. As a rule, you should change your HVAC system’s filter at least once every three months. However, if you have pets or there are household members with allergies, you should change the filter at least every six to eight weeks, or every four weeks in serious cases.

Bathe your pets more frequently. This helps reduce the amount of dander that ends up on the carpet and furniture. You should also keep pets out of your bedroom to prevent your bedding from getting covered in pet hair and dander.

Turn on exhaust fans and open your windows. Turn on the exhaust fans when cooking or cleaning or open your windows occasionally to allow fresh air to enter and stale air to exit your home.

Have a professional HVAC technician inspect your air ducts. It’s also important to have a professional technician from a local HVAC company inspect your HVAC system. This helps prevent costly breakdowns and ensures that warm and cool air is being distributed evenly through the air ducts.

Install an air purifier or upgrade your HVAC’s unit’s filter system. An air purifier would be a smart investment if you frequently suffer from allergy flare-ups. Air purifiers can filter out smaller particles that weren’t caught by the HVAC filter. Alternatively, you can upgrade your HVAC system by installing high-MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) filter systems. The higher a filter’s MERV rating is, the more effectively it can remove small particles. For tips on choosing the right air purifier or HVAC system for your home, consult one of your local HVAC and air conditioning companies.
