Air Filters: Dos and Don’ts

Your HVAC technician has probably advised you to replace your air filter regularly. Depending on your current living conditions and manufacturer recommendations, you’re supposed to change your air filter every one to three months. But there’s more to it than this when it comes to the proper care and use of air filters.

Here Stone Heating and Air, a trusted HVAC and duct cleaning expert, shares some dos and don’ts to remember when it comes to your air filter.

DO: Set a Reminder for Air Filter Replacement

With all the various home maintenance tasks that you need to take care of, it’s totally understandable to forget about changing the air filter. One good solution to this problem is setting a reminder for air filter replacement. This way you can swap out the old filter before it becomes clogged with dust, dirt and other contaminants.

DO: Use the Right Type of Filter

Using the wrong type of air filter can reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner. Its air filtration will also become less effective, increasing the risk of clogs and restricted airflow. When shopping for air filters, make sure that you get the correct product. You can refer to manufacturer guidelines or ask your HVAC maintenance company about which air filter you should get.

DON’T: Forget to Turn Off Your Air Conditioner Before Replacing the Filter

When changing the filter, make sure to turn off your AC completely. Don’t just turn your thermostat down; disconnect the AC entirely before filter replacement. Some models have wiring near the filter, and one wrong move can result in an electrical shock during a filter change if the unit isn’t turned off and disconnected completely.

DON’T: Attempt to Change the Filter If You Have No Idea How to Do It

Call a professional if you’re not sure how to replace your AC’s air filter. Incorrect placement of the air filter will naturally render it ineffective.
