Why Is Your HVAC System Making a Clicking Sound?

It’s that time of year again when home heating repair calls become more frequent. Winter is the season when furnaces work the hardest, which can sometimes lead to problems. If you’re knowledgeable about your furnace issue, however, you’ll be better able to understand what’s going on, what you should do and how to explain it to a repair technician.

If your furnace makes a clicking sound, for example, this post can help you determine what’s going on.

First of all, a furnace might make a clicking sound when it’s first turned on, but this doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with it. It usually just means the ignition is starting. The clicking sound shouldn’t continue, however. If it does, there might be a problem with your HVAC system.

Bearings and inducer. If the furnace is working normally but continues to click, there might be a problem with the bearings in the inducer blower. There could also be a problem with the main furnace. Debris buildup can clog the fan shafts and inducer blowers, producing the sound. This is usually corrected by cleaning and lubricating the fan shaft. If the bearings are worn out, they’ll have to be replaced. Call HVAC maintenance companies to do this.

An oil furnace may have a dirty or loose inducer fan, which can produce the clicking sound. Have your HVAC technician clean and calibrate it to fix the problem.

Pilot light. If your furnace is producing a click but isn’t turning on, it might be a problem with the pilot light assembly. If this comes loose, gets clogged or wears out, it might produce this sound. It’s easy for a technician to fix this, but you should call them immediately because this can seriously damage your HVAC unit.

Ducts. If the furnace is running normally but there’s a clicking sound coming from the ductwork or air vents, there might be a cracked or loose duct. You can have a technician check for this the next time you call them for duct cleaning. Damaged ductwork should be replaced immediately.
